Porch Gallery Ojai presents David Rathman: Field Day. Dimly lit dive bars, decaying basketball courts, football games without fans, roughed-up muscle cars; the environments and objects represented in his works are at once a tribute to and a dirge of modern masculinity. Emotionally reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth paintings, Rathman’s watercolors and prints have a sparse, quiet quality that feeds an air of isolation and nostalgia into the subject matter.
Rathman was the recipient of a Bush Foundation Fellowship, two McKnight Foundation Fellowships, and the Minnesota Book Award. His work has been placed in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the New Museum of Contemporary Art, Stanford University and the Walker Art Center.
