Ojai student art exhibitPorch Gallery – Ojai and the Carolyn GlasoeBailey Foundation present Generation Art 2017, the fourth annual group exhibition featuring local Ojai student artists: Caymin Ellspermann (Besant Hill School), Zela Henderson (Ojai Valley School), Finn Keilty (The Thacher School), Sarame Sahgal (Oak Grove School), and Arley Sakai (Nordhoff High School). The exhibition will be Co-curated by Fliss Francese (Oak Grove School)

Four years ago, Porch Gallery Directors Heather Stobo and Lisa Casoni conceived of the show as a way to teach beginning artists the complete process of editing, presenting and marketing their work. The students are exhibiting and selling their artwork for the first time at a commercial gallery. To educate the students in the process, each student is required to work with the gallery directors to edit their work into a cohesive body that is consistent in both theme and style. After the editing process is complete, the students must write an artist’s statement, promote the show, attend the opening and be prepared to discuss their work. In short, the students are required to perform all the duties of a professional artist.

According to Lisa Casoni, “Our first show was such an enormous success, that we decided to make it a yearly event. It was a treat to see how impressed the community was with the quality of work. We wanted to show the students the importance of taking the final steps in completing their artwork – that the process doesn’t stop with the last stroke of ink, drop of paint or when the final photo is printed. We were delighted that, with just a little guidance, the students were performing like seasoned professionals…but without the attitude.”

“Generation Art, 2017” will be installed at the Carolyn GlasoeBailey Foundation, 248 S. Montgomery, Unit A, in Ojai.
