We Are Spiritual Machines
Works by Mike Saijo
May. 1 through June 29
We Are Spiritual Machines was a multimedia exhibition that explores the history of spiritual movements in Ojai within the context of art and technology. Using photographic images, mixed media print, Oculus Rift virtual reality technology, and sculpture; artist Mike Saijo took a contemporary approach to a historic subject matter. The exhibit also included collaborations with Chumash Elder Julie Lynn Tumamait-Stenslie, Ojai perfumer Janna Sheehan, textile master Setsuko Hayashi (who uses a 400 year old Japanese method dating back to the Edo Period), and a public art workshop at the Krishnamurti Foundation of America.
Saijo is a LA based mixed media artist. His current body of work explores ethnography and the intersections of immigrant history, creative education programs for schools and experimentation with virtual reality. Saijo has exhibited at MOCA, and in the permanent collection at the Orange County Museum of Agriculture and Nikkei History at Cal State Fullerton, Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, as well as University of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand.
