No one single entity is responsible for our urban landscape. There are circumstantial forces at work that weave an unintentional aesthetic.

For the past decade, Ramon Ramirez has explored what he describes as the “LA Aesthetic.” His oil paintings feature lush vibrant skies that backdrop silhouetted and muted skylines portraying the rich texture that is created when natural beauty surrounds rough urban sprawl. Palm tress, whether alone or towering above squat architecture, ground Ramirez’s cityscapes in the built-environment of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. For PARADISE NOW, Ramirez has moved beyond the freeways and focused his eye on Ojai, Oxnard, Santa Monica, Ventura and Whittier. His new body of work continues what Suzanne Bella, Director of the Carnegie Art Museum, described as his “investigation of the Southern California condition.”

Ramon Ramirez is a Los Angeles-based artist with a background in architecture. He received his B.A., M.A. + M.Arch. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, the city has served as his muse from the onset. He is one of the featured artists in the book Contemporary Chicana/Chicano Artists. Along with galleries throughout the country, institutions that have exhibited his works include Boise State University, the Carnegie Art Museum, the Fowler Museum at UCLA, the Mesa Southwest Museum in Arizona, Ohio State University, Queens University at Charlotte, the Snite Museum at the University of Notre Dame, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Woodbury University in Burbank, CA.

The Bilingual Press at Arizona State University, the Business Journal of Hispanic Research, New York University Press and recently UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center have published his paintings and drawings in books, journals and magazines.
